Welcome to our class. I am so happy you will be a Sunset Sweetheart this year!! I am looking forward to a great year with each and everyone of you.
My name is Heather Hurt. If your daughter has been at Brumby in the past, I was Ms. Carpenter. I got married June 1st. My husband's name is Jesse. He likes to come visit us, so the girls will get a chance to meet him throughout the year.
I am a Navy brat. I was born in Chicago. I lived there until I was four, then moved to Dallas. Four years later, we went back to Chicago. We moved to New Orleans two years later. Our final move before my father retired was two years later, when we settled in Powder Springs. I have a younger brother, who is a fifth grade teacher at Brumby as well. The kids know him as Mr. Carpenter.
I went to Tapp Middle School and McEachern High School, both Cobb County Schools. I attended Kennesaw State University in 2002. I graduated in 2007 with my bachelors in early childhood education.
This is my seventh year at Brumby. I taught kindergarten for three years, then moved to fifth. While I loved the babies, fifth is my true calling. I have been teaching all girls since I moved to fifth, and love every minute of it.
In my spare time, my husband and I love to spend time with our three babies (dogs) Maddie, Chloe, and Dodger. We love to take them hiking at Kennesaw Mountain.
This year, we are implementing departmentalization. What that means is that your daughter will have two other teachers throughout the day. We feel this is better prepare them for middle school, and because no two teachers are the exact same way, it gives them a chance to experience more great teaching styles we offer at Brumby. Here is a tentative schedule of how your daughter's day will look like.
7:30-7:45: Arrival, breakfast, and announcements
7:45-8:45: Math in homeroom with me
8:50-9:30: Science in Mrs. Palmer's room
9:35-10:15: Social Studies in Ms. Poteat's room
10:20-11:45: Core expansion classes
11:50-12:35: Reading with me
12:38-12:58: Lunch
1:00-1:15: Recess
1:20-2:00: Language Arts with me
2:00-2:20: Wrap up, pack up, dismissal
We are going to start rotations Thursdays. This will give the girls an opportunity to do "get to know me" activities with the other teachers before we start with curriculum Monday. I will be your go to person for questions and concerns about your daughter's performance in math, reading, and language arts. We will be sending home syllabus for each subject the first week of school so you know what to expect from each class. We will be having parent orientation in two weeks, and you will be able to rotate through the classes to see what your daughter's day is like. You will also be able to meet and get contact information for Mrs. Ann Palmer and Ms. Susan Poteat. We will let you know the exact date when we know it for sure.
Please do not stress about getting all the supplies in right away. Please just make sure that you get them in by Monday, August 13. In fact, the weekend of the 11-12, it's tax free shopping, so if you want to wait until then, I would suggest it.
If you have not yet purchased your daughter's uniforms, you may do so Monday and Tuesday from 8-12. You can also purchase them Wednesday morning. You may also order them on www.brumbyfoundation.com We will start really enforcing the uniform rules on Monday the 13th.
I know this is a lot of information, and I could keep going. I am going to end here though. I will update again Friday. I can't wait to see you Wednesday! Enjoy your last weekend of summer!!!
